Un jeune noble à court d'argent, Gontran de Saint-Paul, veut faire une fin en épousant la fille d'un riche négociant nommé Cucuroux. Une gaffe de son valet de chambre, Jean, lui fait trouver dans son lit la belle Geneviève que le bon Jean a connue au berceau. A partir de là tout s'embrouille, Cucuroux prend Geneviève pour la soeur de Gontran, et croit que la maîtresse de son gendre est une seconde soeur. Ce n'est pas l'arrivée de Célestine ni du cousin Coquelicot qui éclairciront la situation. A la fin, chacun se case selon son coeur ou sa fantaisie.
